A Desert January

Posted on January 2, 2014

December is lovely in the desert, but January is even better. The relaxed pace is perfect for getting back in shape after the indulgence of the holidays. With days that are bright and cool (only very rarely cold), and postcard-perfect skies, January in Tucson can feel like one giant, open-air spa.

What is there to DO in all this sunshine? Here at Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa, the Sonoran Spa, stables, bike trails and canyon hikes provide plenty of options. You’ll also find us glued to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. There’s nothing like cheering on Team USA’s snow and ice mastery while nursing a drink by our own Olympic-sized pool.

Thank you and farewell, 2013!

Posted on December 26, 2013

Late December is a happy blur here at the resort. The flurry of year-end corporate events gives way to guests of all ages: visiting family, enjoying the weather and getting their first sight of a real saguaro. The city is filled with seasonal activities, and, of course, we have had our own grand Christmas and New Year’s Eve dining festivities to prepare for.

Winter in Tucson 2014

Posted on December 11, 2013

We’re writing this after a crazy cold morning, which in Tucson means in the high 30s. The snow has stayed on Mount Lemmon, and this morning saw a light lace of frost on car windows. Tucsonans are seizing the opportunity to break out our “cold weather clothes” while our seasonal visitors stroll jauntily in their light sweaters.

Thanksgiving in Tucson with a View

Posted on November 14, 2013

Late November in Tucson is always popular for those seeking a dose of winter sunshine, glorious hiking, cycling (at events such as El Tour de Tucson, Nov. 23), Mexican food as only Tucson can make it – and of course, Thanksgiving meals that somehow keep going ALL day.

The latter is the inspiration for Thanksgiving 2013 here at Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa. Our popular Grand Brunch Buffet is back, served as always in the Sonoran Ballroom. But different families have different holiday rhythms. So anytime you come by, you can be sure some great food will be ready and waiting. (Just like home, but without the dishes.)

Besides sun, Tucson has plenty of stars

Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter

It’s not news that Tucson has the sun. In addition to a solar energy industry, the city also hosts the country’s only solar-powered bookstore, pizza parlor and, yes, organic ice cream truck.

But did you know that we’re also big on stars? Amateur astronomers regularly visit, to make pilgrimages to observatories around the city and surrounding area. The University of Arizona is a key participant in Mars exploration, most recently via the Curiosity mission of 2012. We even have a bar in town that boasts high-level telescopes on the roof.

Saddle Up

Posted on September 30, 2013

tucson-horseback-riding

Most of Tucson doesn’t look particularly old West. Depending on the part of the city you’re in, either pickup trucks or high-tech cycles rule the streets.

But horseback riding lives on. You can still find stables well within city limits, and “horse crossing” signs even on some fast-moving, high-traffic roads. Western workwear – spotlessly clean but showing wear in the right places, not box-fresh – remains an everyday sight, especially on older gentlemen.

Tennis vacations in Tucson

Posted on September 17, 2013

The world of tennis vacations is a funny thing. Dedicated tennis lovers visit lush tropical islands, laid-back beach towns, etc., in search of the perfect location for a court that, after all, looks much the same anywhere you go.

But if you want to keep on serving long after summer has left most of the country, Tucson is the place. With plenty of sunny days, many of us can wear tennis whites year-round. But with daily temperatures averaging a pleasant 84 degrees, autumn is a particularly nice time. So if you’re coming this way, make sure to pack that racket!
