Press Release: Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa Serves Up Fitness in Cardio Tennis Clinic

Posted on April 11, 2013

Tucson, Ariz. (April 11, 2013) – Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa is putting a topspin on working out with an invigorating weekly Cardio Tennis clinic taught by tennis pro Bruce Connors. Cardio Tennis, which fuses tennis moves and cardio fitness routines, was created in 2005 by the TIA and U.S. Tennis Association and has more than 1.3 million participants in the United States. Connors has created Cardio Tennis programs in facilities across the country.

“Anybody who has a basic background in tennis can do it – you don’t have to be at the top level,” said Connors, who played tennis for the University of Arizona in the 1980s. “Cardio Tennis is not necessarily geared toward perfecting your tennis stroke production, but it’s more about keeping movement going. Once we begin, you’re not going to stop until the very end. There’s no standing in lines to hit; you’re always moving. Time goes by quickly.” Participants burn about 600 calories an hour during the Cardio Tennis workout.

Cardio Tennis at Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa started as an hour-long clinic, but expanded to 90 minutes – by popular demand. “At the end of the hour, everybody wanted to keep going,” Connors said.

In Cardio Tennis, it’s about the workout, not the competition. Connors incorporates tennis drills, including returning balls hit to them by Connors, into the workout, but players don’t play for points. After an hour of drills, Connors often breaks players up into smaller groups to hit volleys, depending on their skill levels. “It always seems to work out,” he said. “People will rise to the occasion and there’s nobody out there killing it, trying to beat the other players.”

Cardio Tennis has attracted a core group of players to the Saturday morning clinics, which are held from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. and will start half an hour earlier once the summer heat sets in. Members pay $15 and non-members $18 for the full clinic (deduct $3 for an hour’s play). Unlike Wimbledon, there is no strict dress code, but Connors advises investing in a good pair of sneakers that can handle the twists and turns made during tennis play.

By day, Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa gives tennis enthusiasts an opportunity to play with breathtaking mountain views as a backdrop. By night, tennis players can use any of five courts, which are lit for night play. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in ongoing round robins, leagues, match play and clinics.
